The Wait Is Over: SRD 5.2 and D&D 5.0 Arrive in Foundry VTT

We’ve been holding our breath for this one—and now it’s here.

The latest round of updates from the Foundry VTT team has landed, and it’s a big one. Between the release of SRD 5.2, the brand new D&D 5.0 system, and the stable rollout of Foundry VTT version 13, creators and players alike have a lot to celebrate.

Let’s break it down.

📘 D&D SRD 5.2 – What’s the Big Deal?

Wizards of the Coast have officially released System Reference Document (SRD) 5.2—a legally shareable chunk of the Fifth Edition rules. It includes monsters, spells, items, and character options, all under a permissive licence that lets creators build and publish their own content.

This update brings that entire SRD 5.2 dataset into Foundry VTT.

That means:

🧙 Foundry VTT D&D 5.0 System – A New Chapter

The 5.0 release of the D&D 5E system marks a major milestone. The three core books have been available for a while now, but this version integrates SRD 5.2 directly into the system.

It also comes with a large internal refactor, setting the stage for future improvements. You might not see all the changes right away, but they’re there—streamlining things behind the scenes so that new features can be added more easily down the line.

⚠️ Important: This new 5.0 system requires Foundry VTT version 13. If you’re still using v12, don’t worry—system version 4.4 has been specially prepared for you, and it includes SRD 5.2 and many of the same improvements.

🛠 Free Rules & Licensing Notes

In addition to SRD 5.2, some content from the D&D Beyond Basic Rules (now called “Free Rules”) is also included. Thanks to a special licensing agreement with Wizards of the Coast, this content can be used within Foundry VTT, but can’t be redistributed.

Each monster, item, or feature includes a source tag. If you’re planning to publish something, check that source field. If it’s from the SRD, you’re in the clear. If it’s from the Free Rules, it’s for personal use only. When in doubt—check the official SRD 5.2 document.

🚀 Foundry 13 – What It Adds

While the 5.0 system release is the big star, it’s backed by Foundry VTT version 13, which brings its own set of goodies:

🎲 Where Does That Leave Us?

This is a major turning point for running D&D on Foundry. The tools are sharper, the content is richer, and the system is cleaner under the hood.

If you’re a DM, player, or module creator—this is the update we’ve all been waiting for.

Time to roll initiative.
